Other contemporary pieces are also Hong Kong's very own: exciting works by LAW Wing-fai, Richard TSANG and Clarence MAK.

The University of Hong Kong Chinese Chamber Ensemble, which gave its inaugural concert on November last year to
much acclaim, was founded in September 1999 by the Department of Music with the aim of disseminating music of the
highest quality to both the university community and the general public. Its repertory consists of both contemporary and traditional works, with an emphasis on exploring new musical language, innovative style and fresh interpretation. The Steering Committee of this ensemble consists of Prof. Bell Yung, Dr. Joshua Chan, and Dr. Chan Hing-yan. The
musicians, most of them core members of the eminent group Chinese Music Virtuosi, are widely acknowledged as
belonging to today's top echelon of Chinese instrumentalists and chamber musicians in Hong Kong: CHU Siu-wai
(dizi/xiao); LOO Sze-wang (sheng), WONG Chi-chung (huqin), PAN Ya-sze (yangqin), LEUNG Oi-ying (zheng) and
YEUNG Po-wing (pipa). The ensemble is supported by a generous grant from the "Mrs. Li Ka Shing Fund" of the
University of Hong Kong.

The Second National (China) Conference of Melody Studies
University of Hong Kong, June 2000
English description
Please use the Character Set Traditional Chinese (Big5) to read the following text.

Background

The National Society of Melody Studies (China) was established in July 1998 during the First National Conference on
Melody Studies held in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. The conference was initiated and organized by the Research
Institute of Music (Beijing). The mission of the Society is to promote the investigation and teaching of melody in
scholarship, composition, and performance. The scope of music includes traditional, art, and popular music of China and elsewhere.

The study of melody may be regarded as an area being left out in the Western traditional practice of "Four Major
Subjects", namely, 'harmony', 'counterpoint', 'orchestration' and 'form & analysis'. Although a dedicated field of subject
called 'melody' is not common in Western curricula/circle, scholars in China and some other parts of the world have
longed for a formal label and infrastructure to promote the studies of melody, especially when they have encountered
difficulties in applying Western methods in the research of ethnic Chinese musics which are essentially monophonic (as opposite to Western polyphonic). Instead of labelling or limiting this academic activity to the realm of ethnomusicology,
the idea is quite ambitious. During the First National Conference on Melody Studies when the nature of 'melody studies' was enthusiastically discussed, many scholars expressed that 'melody studies' should cover all or most areas of musical research because melody is almost omnipresent in all kinds of music. The possible kinds of approach to be used for the studies of melodies were also discussed.

The First National Conference on Melody Studies drew together not only scholars and students, but composers,
performers and teachers from all over China, with a total of 85 people, approximately, including 7 people from Hong
Kong. The paper-reading sessions were divided into 2 groups, focusing on Western and ethnomusicological types,
respectively. Election for executive committee of the Society was held at the end of the conference. Prof. Zhao
Song-guang of Guangzhou Conservatory of Music was elected as the Chairman. In his inaugural speech, Prof. Zhao
indicated that the National Society of Melody Studies, which is one of the handful societies of academic studies in music in China, is the first one that has incorporated members from Hong Kong SAR. The links to the outside world, through Hong Kong or other sources, will strengthen the works of the society. With the vision to introduce the works of Chinese scholars to the outside world and vice versa, Prof. Bell Yung initiated the idea of having HKU to host the second conference in which not only mainland scholars, but overseas scholars will be invited. This idea then received a general enthusiasm among members.

The Second National Conference on Melody Studies, funded by the University's 'Louis Cha Fund for Chinese Studies and East/West Studies in the Faculty of Arts", will be hosted by the Department of Music, University of Hong Kong on June 8 -13, 2000. It is co-presented by the National (China) Society of Melody Studies.

The Themes of the Conference
1. The nature and structure of melody and its cultural connotations and significance.
2. Geography of music through the study of melody
3. The potential of melodic development through compositional process and performance practice
4. Theories on melody
[Music repertories addressed may include traditional, art, and popular music of China and elsewhere]

Language
1. The offical language is Chinese (Putonghua).
